Stony Rapids is the closest town to the Lodge that has a current weather forecast. Our float base is located here, just 50 miles south.
EARLY SEASON UPDATE
It was a tough opener. With the help of some big wind, the ice on Scott and nearly all of the fly out lakes are now ice free and starting to fish well (Smalltree, the lone hold out, is still ice covered as of June 29th). Our first group in camp did not have the best of weather. It was much more like September than June. But the group was comprised of over 90% long running Scott guests who have experienced some incredible early season fishing. They understood that as the weather goes in the north so goes the fishing. Despite some nasty weather, they fished every day and caught lots of fish. The numbers were great for most anglers but the big pike were playing hard to get. Trophy numbers were down but spirits stayed up and 100% of our first week of anglers, including the two new guys, rebooked for 2009. That says more about the high level of customer service and the general fun-loving atmosphere than the fishing but everyone left having had a good experience.
Our second group had a different arrival. Just as the first group left the weather turned. It was warm and clearing when the Beavers and Otters landed at Scott. By the morning of June 27th it was a new world with blue skies and a powerful sun. The cold water of Scott actually kept things from getting too hot. It was for two days about as perfect as conditions can get. And the fish responded. Lots of numbers AND lots of trophies. Life was good on the 60th as this crowd gets into the “luxury in the wilderness” lifestyle.
Keep watching this NEWS section for a new feature this season. So many of our regular web readers want to know about every trophy caught that we will soon be publishing THE TUNDRA TIMES right here every day. Keep checking back for updates plus the daily edition of our paper—“All the news that fit to catch”, the smallest circulation daily paper in the north.
THE GREAT ANGLER BAILOUT
Banks have had their bailout. So have car companies and insurance companies to name just a few. Why not something for the hard working angler? Scott Lake Lodge now has the cure for your “Can’t go up north this year" blues.
We have just had a corporate group cancel their trip due to a company wide travel ban. Their loss is your gain. Now we have 24 spots available in early August. The great news for our clients is that we can offer the deal of lifetime on the trip of a lifetime. If you have the fishing itch, now is the time to scratch it. Come fish at a destination both luxurious and exotic from August 2nd–6th not at the regular price of $3,995 per person but for an incredible price of $2195 USD per person. Four full days of fishing with all expenses covered from our hub in Saskatoon, SK, including an experienced guide, use of top notch fishing tackle, hotel room on your way home, fishing license, even wine with dinner. This package comes well wrapped.
For that price, you can barely get a good outpost in Ontario. And this is the top of the fishing world, right on the 60th parallel. I know what you might be thinking, “What’s the catch?” There is a catch: lots of pike, lake trout and grayling. Other than fish, there is no catch; you will be treated to the same Royal Scott Lake treatment we provide every customer. From the great fishing, to professional guides, to fantastic meals, to pristine scenery, it will all be here. Hot tub, available massage, wireless internet, ten optional fly out destinations, gourmet shore lunches and a totally relaxing atmosphere are all part of the Scott Lake Lodge Experience. Now is your time.
This is a perfect opportunity to bring your wife up here, your buddy, or impress a client. Since I am already up at Scott Lake getting ready for another great season, you can reach me by email at ken@scottlakelodge.com or you could give Shirley Albrent in our Wisconsin customer service office a call at 888-830-9525 to book immediately or just get more details. Call now and have your choice of cabins and guides.
With a deal like this, these spots won’t be around for long! And while you get this bailout thanks to the forfeited corporate deposits you will not have to bail your own boat.
WE ARE UP AND RUNNING
Fighting ice at every front the Scott Lake Lodge Experience started on June 21, the longest day of the year. The first float plane was able to land about a mile from the lodge on June 18th and supplies and staff were ferried by boat to the lodge. It was exciting. By Opening Day we could land at our back dock but there was white ice everywhere despite temperatures that must have been near 80. It was hot, sunny, calm and a bit surreal considering it was still a world locked in ice. Then on Sunday evening we had a heavy rain and the wind came up big. Amazingly by Monday afternoon most of the ice on the lake just disappeared.
We’re playing a little catch up, having had only 48 hours to get the show on the road. But the fish have been accommodating. Stay tuned.
ICE UPDATE: JUNE 16
It’s finally hot at Scott. Paul Hamilton reports that temps in the high 70s have really softened up the stubborn ice. There is now “almost” enough room to land the Otter. The lake ice is in retreat from the shorelines. With high temperatures in the forecast at Stony Rapids, along with the prospect of rain, we are confident that we will welcome to our dock the group of anglers arriving on the evening of June 21st and we will offer some extra excitement—dodging ice bergs in the boats.
Since Paul and fellow “campers” Gerald and Steve Yanish have been at Scott since May 26th, the island is nearly ready for our first group of guests. The Scott Lake Lodge staff will be arriving on June 18 to do the final preparations. We will be ready. There will be plenty of ice for drinks.

Live Update from Lodge: June 5
Guide Paul Hamilton is at Scott Lake right now along with a few good men getting things ready and monitoring the ice conditions. In his words: The good news is that it was warm for about a week, but then cooled right off for the last couple of days. Got a couple inches of snow two days ago but it all has melted now. The ice is slowly melting and the open water areas are getting bigger by the day.
Things are looking up. Forecast is calling for warm weather this weekend and next week. We've been working on the plumbing for the new showers and sinks. We've been staining the chairs and a few other things around the island, and we've been prepping the island and getting the flyout gear ready.

Ice Report: June 1, 2009
In 2008 it was fire. In 2009 it’s ice. People who love the far north are being tested. After a relatively easy winter expectations of a ”normal” summer have been dashed.
The spring in the North has not come nearly fast enough. With a mean temperature of just 35 degrees F for the entire month of May, Mother Nature has left us with a still solid lake. And, with just a week and a half until scheduled opening, the reality of the situation has prompted us to reschedule the first two groups of the season further back into the year. Our start of season is now set for June 21, the summer solstice. We are confident that the stubborn ice will have retreated against about 20 hours a day of sunlight. In the meantime some of our staff are still ice fishing.
Three brave members of our staff were dropped off at the island this week. They’ll keep an eye on the ice situation and get the island as close to ready as possible. They have already started to see signs of ice rot and the forecast is looking much better for the next couple weeks.
If there are any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at info@scottlakelodge.com or call our office toll free at 888-830-9525.
Below are a few pictures taken at the end of May. While it looks like mid-winter now we know from many years of watching the ice on Scott that summer always explodes in June. Keep watching this site for regular updates.

GENERAL MANAGER SPRING REPORT
The long time Lodge carpenters are preparing for a mid-April trip to the island for some cabin renovations. We are standing by our commitment to get the bathrooms and cabin interiors a new look and better functionality for this season. Scott Lake guides Gerry Yanish, Paulie (Paul Hamilton), J-5 (Jon Wimpney) and myself will be tackling the tasks of flying in freight, cutting several cords of wood, stripping and staining furniture, stripping and re-doing boats, unpacking the fly-out barrels for inventory and re-packing, making sure there are still fish in the lake, and making sure they still taste great.
NEW CHICAGO-SASKATOON FLIGHT

The return portion, flight #6842, departs Saskatoon at 12:45 PM and lands back in the windy city at 4:35 PM. The flights are available in economy as well as first class.

NEW HOTEL FOR 2009
Scott Lake has partnered with a new hotel for the 2009 season. The Saskatoon Inn will be providing the accommodations for the southbound portion of our guests' trip this season. The hotel has attractive rooms and a central courtyard featuring a swimming pool, hot tub, lounge, and restaurant. The kitchen is open until 10:30 PM with room service until 11:00 PM, giving hungry guests ample time to grab a bite to eat upon arrival.
A special Scott Lake Lodge guest rate of $109.95 CDN has been established for anyone wishing to begin their adventure earlier or staying later to explore the city of Saskatoon.
