CUSTOMS

Please be aware, the identification requirements for all travelers into Canada will change effective January 23, 2007:

"The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) will require all travelers to and from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda to present a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States. The goal is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers".

This means that all Scott Lake Lodge guests
arriving via AIR into Saskatoon
will need a PASSPORT in 2007.

The identification requirements will expand to include all travelers via land as well(drivers to Saskatoon) as well next year, January 1, 2008.

(For more info on the new requirements, go to the US Dept of State FAQ's at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2225.html#4)

Usually, clearing customs is a 10-20 second process. If you don't have appropriate identification it could be an hour nightmare. Remember Canada is a foreign country and you do have to play by their rules. A driver's license, even with your picture, is not proof of U.S. citizenship. You need:

A VALID PASSPORT if traveling via air (as of 1/23/07)

OR

Your original birth certificate or a voter's certificate and a picture ID
(only acceptable if driving to Saskatoon).

If you are traveling with a minor, please be aware of the following Canadian policies: You will need ID for each person under 18 traveling with you. You also should have a notarized letter of permission from your spouse. Divorced parents who share custody of their children should carry copies of the legal custody documents. Non-parents or guardians should have written permission from the parents to supervise the children.

If you don't have a passport, this is a great time to get one. It makes all foreign travel a lot easier. Your county courthouse is the first place to check, or call your local travel agent.

Do not attempt to bring firearms, knives or pepper sprays. Food items can also create problems. Remember that customs officials are trained not to have a sense of humor. Keep the process business-like.

WARNING:

Be advised that any person who possesses a criminal record and wishes to travel to Canada requires a Temporary Resident Permit.  This permit is valid for up to one year but may take up to 6 months to obtain through government channels.  Services to expedite this problem are availablel.  One of these is Canada Border Crossing.  You can contact them at 800-438-7020.  You can also get help from any Canadian law firm.  We can offer a recommendation.

In the past few years we have seen an increase in border security and Scott guests have been turned back in Saskatoon due to this issue.  Unfortunately they lost their fishing trip and their vacation.  Most were due to alcohol related offenses.  Please do not ignore this potential problem!
